The cases of Harmon Rabb, former Navy fighter pilot, and his fellow lawyers of the U.S. Navy's Judge Advocate General's office.
Commander Harmon Rabb, Jr. and Lieutenant Colonel Sarah MacKenzie are JAG lawyers, who together investigate and litigate crimes committed by Navy and Marine personnel. Occasionally, they engage in adventurous activities in order to solve their cases. With Rabb's fighter pilot background, and MacKenzie's good looks, they are a hot team both in and out of the courtroom.
Before I delve into tonight's episode of "JAG," let me question the central premise of the reason why I'm tuning in. A non-professional pitcher who can put enough juice on a fastball to knock a batter into the hospital? C'mon. Sure there's some cursory talk about him being scouted in his civilian life, but would an out-of-practice ballplayer have the ability to do so?

This thought nagged at me during the entire hour, which, as it turns outs, allows me to accept the mindlessly functional dialogue, delivered in a cadence that's like "Dragnet" without the urgency, that serves only to further the plot while ignoring insight or character development. That's probably not a fair complaint of a long-running series I've never before watched, but why else stunt-cast Barry Zito to lure baseball fans unfamiliar with the show?

Which brings me to the reason I'm writing this. When Zito delivers his first line of dialogue I burst in gales of affectionate laughter. I'm a Yankee fan but a baseball fan first, and, from Raffy Palmeiro's Viagra ads to cinematic excursions like Roger Clemens in KINGPIN and Mike Piazza in TWO WEEKS NOTICE, I always get a kick out off seeing ballplayers work outside their uniform. And because Zito seems like such a cool, laid-back guy (and because the already-handsome Oakland southpaw looks great in military garb), I embraced his awkward attempt at acting. In fact, his stilted delivery matched the unconvincing professional actors around him.

The plot apart from Zito's storyline is a compelling enough rehash of COURAGE UNDER FIRE, though I'm not a fan of what I assume is a regular facet - the filmed-flashback structure of the show. But I appreciate the attention to detail in the baseball scenario. It uses the intricacies of the game to its advantage, giving non-fans an accurate impression of what goes on before, between, and after pitches - the moments the unenlightened sometimes refer to as "boring." Good also is the common sense surrounding the implications of the lawsuit, even if its resolution was a little too pat and the reverence towards the Hallowed Game is a little syrupy (a quibble I have with even FIELD OF DREAMS, an unarguable classic baseball fable). But, hey, that's episodic television for you.

Forgive me for not accepting the conventions of prime-time network drama, but I'm usually insulted when a melodramatic score underlines every story beat. If it were an intoxicating, distinctive composition like the lovely score in "Six Feet Under," it'd add extra meaning to the scene. But generic strings and horns hamper the chance for the show to transcend its small-screen roots.

Annoyances such as this are inherent in television. The conventionality of the medium panders to FCC guidelines and "JAG"'s quest for the widest possible audience, and as a result the art suffers. Even the most esteemed television programs (like "NYPD Blue" and "ER") have this subtle censorship imposed on them, resulting in studios compensating by pressing the boundaries of language and subject matter instead of pressing the boundaries of ideas. Why else do so many shows tread the same doctor/lawyer/cop ground?

But I'm glad I got a whiff of baseball tonight. CBS should be commended for the timing of their decision to run this episode. I experienced my first baseball withdrawal symptoms this week, so much I started wearing my Yankee cap again. I even almost went so far as to watch a BAD NEWS BEARS sequel, but my taste in movies slapped me out of that. Barely a month after the World Series ended and already craving a fix, I'll take any morsel I can get.
J.A.G. - Military parlance for Judge Advocate General's corps, the elite cadre of Naval officers trained as lawyers who investigate and prosecute military crimes, including murder, treason, espionage, and terrorism.

Featuring explosive action, dramatic stories, and feature film-quality special effects, JAG is one of the most powerful and ambitious dramas ever made for television. JAG follows the adventures of Harmon "Harm" Rabb Jr. (David James Elliott), a Naval officer who originally followed in his Vietnam MIA father's footsteps and became a pilot. After suffering a crash while landing his F-14 Tomcat on a storm-tossed carrier at sea, Harm was diagnosed with night blindness and eventually transferred to the Navy's Judge Advocate General (JAG) corps. Given far-ranging powers as a detective, prosecutor, and defense attorney, Harm now travels around the globe in order to investigate, prosecute, and defend those accused of crimes in the military. Reporting for work against an awe-inspiring landscape of dueling fighter planes, imposing nuclear submarines, and majestic aircraft carriers, Harm fights in and out of the courtroom with the same daring and tenacity that once made him a top gun in the air.

After originally being partnered with fellow Navy lawyer and computer weapons specialist Meg Austin (Tracey Needham), Harm now works alongside Marine Corps attorney Sarah "Mac" MacKenzie (Catherine Bell), a beautiful, confident, and tough lawyer who is an equal match for Harm. Mac shares Harm's desire to seek out the truth in every case - even if their approaches to finding it are often radically different - and keep the delicate balance between what's good for the military and what's best for the common good.

Working alongside Harm and Mac are Admiral A.J. Chegwidden (John M. Jackson), a former Navy Seal who oversees the JAG office; Lt. Bud Roberts (Patrick Labyorteaux), a young and knowledgeable lawyer; Lt. Harriett Sims (Karri Turner), Bud's wife and the JAG office's administrative assistant; Cmdr. Sturgis Turner (Scott Lawrence), Harm and Mac's friend and frequent opponent in the courtroom; and P.O. Jason Tiner (Chuck Carrington), who assists the Admiral and has aspirations of becoming a JAG lawyer himself someday.

http://www.jag-fans.com/

Throughout the fall, viewers have called and e-mailed, wondering how the producers of "JAG" make actor Patrick Labyorteaux appear to have suffered the same leg amputation as his character, Lt. Bud Roberts.

"He wanted to keep his job and he's a master of his craft, so he went out and blew up his leg," said Avery Drewe, a "JAG" post-production producer. He's kidding, of course. Drewe said the missing leg is achieved through a combination of effects, including Labyorteaux wearing a prosthesis and bending his leg so it's bound up behind him in a specially created rig.

"We work carefully with the camera angles so when he's walking toward us we can't see that," Drewe said. If his leg should peek out, it's digitally erased in post-production. A scene where Bud walked up the stairs combined special effects shots of Labyorteaux with shots of a real amputee. Now Bud has recovered to the point that he walks using a prosthetic leg with only a slight limp.

"Our writing staff wanted to make it accurate, so we tracked what the real progression would be," Drewe said.

Original article: http://www.post-gazette.com/tv/20021219owen6.asp
